There is huge opportunity for promoting intra-regional tourism between Goa and Sri Lanka through joint ventures at governmental and private sector levels, said Prasad Kariyawasam, the High Commissioner of Sri Lanka in New Delhi.
The High Commissioner indicated that both regions have "historical and religious ties similarities and differences" and that investors and tour organizers should jump on board and help push the initiative.
He also felt that it could be a stepping stone for opening up both destinations for not only intra- regional tourism but international visitors as well.
Considering India’s size, The High Commissioner felt that strengthening Sri Lanka's existing links with Goa was a good option. The inflow of tourists to Sri Lanka after 30 years of strife was huge and accommodation is falling short of the demand, quoting the High Commissioner the Indian media reported.
"While investment in resort hotels and boutique hotels is welcome, we also want to upgrade small hotels and rest houses and also construct large shopping malls, theme parks, and yacht marinas," the High Commissioner said.
He also provided a few possibilities, which included both Sri Lanka and Goa producing an annual tourism events directory and organizing food festivals and events to promote tourism to the area.
