The resolution adopted by the Tamil Nadu Assembly seeking economic sanctions on Sri Lanka by India and some other countries is ridiculous and it would be highly damaging for India's national interest, Indian Janata Party chief Subramanian Swamy said.
"The resolution asking the Centre for economic sanctions on Sri Lanka is not only ridiculous but highly damaging for India's national interest," he said in a statement here.
He claimed that while the resolution was adopted based on a UN report on alleged human rights violations by Lankan armed forces during the conflict with the LTTE, "the said UN report also blames the LTTE for provoking and committing human rights violations in equal measure."
"The Assembly makes no mention of that, showing it to be a highly partisan and narrow-minded resolution," he charged.
The Janatha Party leader said Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa must use the mandate she received for the benefit of the people and not for the LTTE in Sri Lanka, for most of them are dead or gone anyway
Meanwhile, Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minster and D.M.K. Leader M Karunanidhi has termed the resolution as an age-old tactic adopted to mislead the people.
