The 15-member disaster relief team sent by the Government of Sri Lanka to carry out volunteer activities in the tsunami-hit Ishinomaki area of Miyagi prefecture of Japan returned home after successful completion of their work.
The team was sent to Japan on May 12 following the Japanese tsunami disaster, and they were involved in mud and debris clearance operations for a period of 2 weeks, in collaboration with ‘Peace Boat’, a Non-Governmental Organisation.
Sending this team was a gesture of gratitude to Japan for being a close friend of Sri Lanka, particularly in the event of the 2004 tsunami that devastated Sri Lanka, stated Sri Lankan Ambassador to Japan Admiral (Rtd.) Wasantha Karannagoda on receiving the team when they arrived in Japan.
The Government of Sri Lanka also donated 1 million US dollars (approximately 80 million yen) and 3 million tea bags to Japan.
