No debate on Sri Lanka in Malaysian Parliament

A debate on alleged civil war atrocities in Sri Lanka was refused in the Lower House of the Parliament of Malaysia at Kualalumpur today (22) on the ground that it “involved the internal affairs of another country”.

The ruling was given by Deputy Speaker Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar when members sought to speak on a notice for debate filled by Mr. Johari Abdul (PKR-Sungai Petani).

Mr. Johari Abdul said that when he, along with another member M Manogaran (DAP-Teluk Intan) and Senator S Ramakrishnan, visited Sri Lanka early this month and found that the situation in the northern part of the island nation was “appalling”.

According to him nearly 300,000 were now living in camps for Internally Displaced Persons and that they included thousands of Muslims.
