Fiftieth AALCO annual sessions begin today

 

The 50th annual sessions of the Asian-African Legal Consultative Organization (AALCO) will be held at the Cinnamon Lakeside Hotel Colombo from today.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa will inaugurate the session that will held till July 1.

Around 200 high level representatives of 47 member states will participate in the deliberations on international issues that are placed on the agenda of the Organization.

In addition, many observer delegations and international organizations also participate in the event jointly organized by the Sri Lanka Ministries of Justice and the External Affairs.

Australia and New Zealand will participate as observers. Among the delegates are 9 Ministers of Justice and 6 Attorneys General. The President of the International Court of Justice Mr. Hisashi Owada is also expected to participate in the sessions.

The Asian African Legal Consultative Organization is an outcome of the Bandung Conference held in Indonesia in 1955. Member States meet annually to exchange views, experiences, and information on matters of common concern having legal implications and to make recommendations if deemed necessary.

The Asian African Legal Consultative Organization whose headquarters is located in New Delhi, India. Sri Lanka is a founder member of AALCO.

This is the fourth time that Sri Lanka is hosting an AALCO annual session and Sri Lanka is privileged to host the Golden Jubilee Session.

At the 50th sessions in Colombo the current President of AALCO, Celina Kombani, Minister for Constitutional and Legal Affairs of Tanzania will hand over the presidency to Sri Lanka Justice Minister Rauff Hakeem.
