Hosting the 50th annual sessions of the Asian-African Legal Consultative Organization (AALCO) in Sri Lanka is very significant as the participants can gain first hand experience about Sri Lanka's dramatic development since the successful eradication of terrorism, the President of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) Hisashi Owada said. Mr. Owada who called on President Mahinda Rajapaksa at Temple Trees yesterday hailed President Rajapaksa's inaugural speech at AALCO at Cinnamon Lakeside Hotel yesterday morning.
In his speech President Rajapaksa said "It is of the utmost importance to remind ourselves that these objectives need to be accomplished in accordance with the cultural traditions and value systems which are part of the experience of each society.
The ICJ President recollected the centuries old relations between Sri Lanka and Japan in many areas.
He was of the opinion that Sri Lanka and Japan enjoy many things in common.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa thanked Owada for extending enormous support by Japan to Sri Lanka during the tsunami that hit Sri Lanka in 2004.
Chief Justice Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake, External Affairs Minister Prof G.L. Peiris, Japanese Ambassador in Sri Lanka Kunio Takahashi , Acting Attorney General Eva Wanasundara and Foreign Ministry Secretary Karunathilake Amunugama were also present.
