Presidential Awards for Excellence in Export |

The significant role of exporters in contributing to the economic development and progress of the country was recognized in the 18th Presidential Export Awards held at Temple Trees yesterday. On this occasion, President Mahinda Rajapaksa conferred awards to the achievers in export in 2007, 2008 and 2009.
Awards were conferred in recognition of excellence in different categories and capacities which included the Best Sri Lankan Brand Exporter, the Best Small and Medium Scale Enterprise Exporter, as well as the exporters who have performed best in exporting to the highest number of destinations, making the largest contribution to rural development, achieving the highest net foreign exchange, and the Exporter of the Year for each year in the past three years. 57 awards and 40 certificates of merit were presented.
The event also saw the launch of the Ceylon Cinnamon Logo for the export of Sri Lankan cinnamon known for its quality.
Initiated in 1981 to recognize Sri Lankan exporters’ contribution to the national economy and social development, the awards ceremony has been organized 18 times so far.
The export sector expanded remarkably in the post-conflict period. In 2009, the value of Sri Lankan exports was around USD 7000 million. In 2010, it increased by 12% to more than USD 8300 million, highlighting the contribution that exporters can make to the economic progress of the country.
The event was attended by Minister of Industry and Commerce Rishad Bathiyutheen, Deputy Minister Jayarathna Herath, Secretary to the Ministry of Industries and Commerce Thilak Kollure, Chairman and CEO of Export Development Board Janaka Rathnayake, Director General Sujatha Weerakoon and a distinguished gathering of local and foreign businessmen.
