Renovation work of Miyangamkulam tank in the Batticaloa district was commenced recently, under the project to rehabilitate 2000 village tanks and several major irrigation schemes during this year. Renovation of the tank will cost Rs.75 million. Over 4,500 acres of paddy lands would be brought under plough after the renovation of this tank. Irrigation tanks which need renovation and tanks which were affected by the recent floods have been earmarked for renovation by the Government and allocating Rs.2, 960 million for the project. The project is carried out by the Economic Development Ministry jointly with the Agrarian Services and Wildlife Ministry. Rehabilitation of 233 village tanks in the country has already been commenced and progressing well.
