The following decisions were taken by the Cabinet at its meeting held on July 06, 2011.
Amendment to Exploration Phase I of Drilling Programme
The Cabinet granted approval to a proposal made by President Mahinda Rajapaksa to proceed with the amendments made to the exploration work of the Block SL 2007-01-001, a drilling programme undertaken according to an Agreement signed between the Government of Sri Lanka and Cairn Lanka (Pvt.) Ltd.
Drilling is the most technical and risky aspect of a petroleum exploration programme and drilling locations and drill depths change at short notice due to operational difficulties and emergencies.
Amendment of Ranaviru Seva Authority Act
A proposal made by the President to amend the composition of the Board of Management of the Ranaviru Seva Authority by including Chiefs of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army, Navy and Air Force, and to instruct the Legal Draftsman to draft the amendment of the relevant legislation was approved by the Cabinet.
The Ranaviru Seva Authority has been established by an Act of Parliament to promote the welfare of disabled members of the Armed Forces, the Police and of the dependents of the members of these Forces killed or missing in action.
Construction of Ellewewa Reservoir
On a proposal made by Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources Management Nimal Siripala de Silva, measures are underway to construct a reservoir in Viralagala in the Ratnapura District, as a solution to the scarcity of water in the Panamure Scheme.
The implementation of this project at an estimated cost of Rs.470 million will alleviate the difficulties faced by the farmers in the Panamure Scheme. In addition, the proposed mini hydro power plant is expected to generate 2.59 GWH of energy.
Water Supply Improvements to Madu Church
The Cabinet approved a project proposed by Minister of Water Supply and Drainage Dinesh Gunawardena, to improve the water supply to the Madu Church, in the Mannar district. During the festival season, nearly 450,000 people visit and encamp in the Church premises, and a water shortage is experienced.
The project will be implemented in two stages. Stage I of the project that will be undertaken at a cost of Rs. 101.4 million will consist of the following:
- Improvements to existing water intake and pumping station,
- Improvements to internal distribution system,
- Provision of additional stand-posts,
- Construction of additional tube wells and bathing points with multiple showers.
Stage II of the project that will be implemented at a cost of Rs.403.8 million from 2012 to 2014 will consist of the following:
- Pumping facilities,
- 12 Km water transmission pipeline,
- Elevated storage tank,
- Additional distribution system,
- Water purification facility.
Renovation of Internal Road Network in Rukmalgama Housing Scheme
The Cabinet granted approval to a proposal made by Minister of Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities Wimal Weerawansa to improve the internal road network in the Rukmalgama Housing Scheme, in Rukmale, Kottawa in the Maharagama Urban Council at a cost of Rs. 21 million.
The project will be funded by the National Housing Development Authority.
