The ‘Lakvijaya’ coal-fired power plant at Norochcholai starts functioning from today, adding 300 MWs to the national power grid. According to sources, the pre-tests conducted on yesterday have been successful. Prompt measures have been taken to resolve the technical issues, with the support from a team of Chinese experts.
The additional supply of power to the national power grid will help maintain an uninterrupted power supply to the public at a moment when the hydro power generation has been affected by the prevailing drought in the upcountry.
When completed in 2014, the Norochcholai coal-fired power station will contribute 900 MWs to the national power grid. A significant reduction in the production cost of electricity is expected simultaneously.
