The Land Reforms Commission (LRC) will establish a new office in Jaffna in August.
"Nearly 70 per cent of ownerless lands have been identified in Jaffna and the LRC will take steps to provide lands to the displaced people and those who have returned after many years," Executive Director of the Commission Hariguptha Rohanadeera said.
The returnees and the displaced will be given 20 perches of land each for the construction of houses and two acres under a three-year lease for crop cultivation. "If the beneficiaries take necessary measures to develop the lands, the LRC will take steps to permanently hand over the deeds to the beneficiaries," Rohanadeera said.
He also said that the Board of Investment has directed nearly 800 foreign investment proposals to the LRC regarding eco tourism projects in lands identified in the North and the East. "Once these project proposals are evaluated the LRC will take measures to issue 25 to 50 acres of land to selected applicants under a 30-year lease to carry out the projects. The lease can be extended upto 50 years depending on the circumstances," Rohanadeera said.
He said that nearly 20,000 acres of abandoned lands and unaccounted State lands have been identified in the Northern and Eastern provinces and the LRC believes that there are nearly 75,000 acres of such lands in the North and the East.
