More women and youth in SAARC Parliaments needed - Speaker

Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa has said that he favours greater representation of women and youth in the Parliaments of SAARC countries.

Speaking at the fourth conference of SAARC Speakers and Parliamentarians in New Delhi on Saturday, the Speaker said: "We must strive to increase youth and female representation in our respective Parliaments because greater participation of youth and female representatives is essential in the task of achieving socio-economic development."

He said the SAARC region has witnessed the oldest form of democracy practiced by the Sakyas, the clan of Prince Siddharta, who became Gautama Buddha.

In a statement made on the Lok Sabha TV, he said the fourth conference of Speakers and Parliamentarians is significant because this is the first time that all eight countries of SAARC that are attending it are parliamentary democracies. He note that, earlier this year, the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation had adopted the SAARC Charter of Democracy. "The Charter is a clear demonstration of the commitment of the eight SAARC nations to the collective ideals of democracy and the rule of law," he added.
