Price of essential food declines

The price of essential goods and vegetables have reduced owing to an increase in crop cultivation and increased availability of goods, the Ministry of Cooperative and Internal Trade said.

The price of essential goods such as rice, sugar, green gram, locally produced red onions, dried chillies and eggs have reduced in comparison to prices in the past few months, Ministry officials said.

They said that the prices of a large number of vegetables produced in the low country have reduced by 89% and the prices of vegetables produced in the up country have reduced by 60%.

The prevailing weather conditions also accounted for the increase in crops which has led to a decrease in the price of vegetables.
