Since the end of the humanitarian operation against LTTE in May 2009, the Central Bank sponsored credit programmes have disbursed Rs.4.6 billion to the conflict-affected people and businesses in the Northern Province to uplift people's lives and promote income generating activities (IGAs) in the region. released Monday said the Bank had allocated Rs. 3 billion in a separate credit line named "Awakening North" exclusively designed for meeting the requirement of conflict affected businesses and IGAs in the Province.
The Bank has also introduced a special Credit Guarantee Scheme to promote development credit through Participating Financial Institutions (PFIs).
In addition, the monetary authority has extended activities under Poverty Alleviation Microfinance Project PAMP II 'Prabodini' into the Jaffna Peninsula in 2009.
To facilitate Bank's operations in the Province, the Central Bank will open a Project Regional Office (PRO) at Jaffna under Poverty Alleviation Microfinance Project 'Prabodini' on Wednesday (July 20th).
The Central Bank said it has conducted a financial literacy programme since mid-2009 to educate the people in the region on facilities available under formal financial sector and to promote financial inclusiveness among low income groups.
The Bank has conducted 571 such awareness programmes addressing 35,250 people in the Northern Province during the last two years.
The credit lines facilitated through the Participating Financial Institutions have been designed to provide assistance for the conflict-affected to resume their former businesses and create other Income Generating Activities to reactivate their economic life.
Credit facilities have been made available for eligible persons under different activities in the Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, Small and Medium Sector Enterprises (SMEs) and micro businesses sectors.
