CID to track computer crimes

 

A Cyber Crime Unit (CCU) and a Digital Forensic Lab have been set up by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to assist the public who have been deceived by organised computer crime.

The Computer Crime Act No.24 of 2007 was presented for Cabinet approval by the then Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa on May 2, 2005. The Act was enacted in July 9, 2007

The DIG Criminal Investigation Department set-up this unit specially on the direction of President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa to wipe-out computer crime in the country.

All public complaints received by the CID will be investigated by using digital forensic and on line investigations, said the CID DIG at a press conference held yesterday at the CID conference chambers.

This special unit will conduct investigations for offences under the Computer Crime Act, such as, hacking, unauthorized access to the system and manipulated data, collecting, changing, corrupting and destroying Data without permission, Offence against National Security, National Economy and Public Order and Offence creating for cheating Criminal Breach of Trust.

The unit headed by DIG CID and Director CID will consist 14 police personnel to conduct investigations.
