The sea plane pier situated in Dandugam Oya in Dandugama Kirindigoda area will be country's first sea plane airport. The passengers to and from the Katunayake international airport can embark and disembark from this pier.

Dandugam Oya in Seeduwa area is now being developed to build the pier. The Ministry of Economic Development has planned to spend Rs. 100 million for the project.

The new float-plane landing strip would also have a mini passenger terminal and also offer hangar facilities for aircraft.

The proposed project to develop the Negombo lagoon for landing sea planes met with wide spread protests from people of the area.

Two sea planes are to be put into service at the initial stage targeting tourists, the Ministry said.

SriLankan Airlines this year introduced the air taxi service with sea planes to several locations in the country.
