Island-wide victory for UPFA |

President Mahinda Rajapaksa led United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) secured an overwhelming victory at the Local Government Elections 2011, concluded after final phase on voting on Saturday 23, when voters in most areas of the North went to the polls for the first time since the defeat of the LTTE.
Elections to local bodies in the north could not be held for nearly three decades due to the terrorism of the LTTE that deprived the Tamil people in the region of all democratic rights.
The UPFA won in 45 of the 65 local bodies throughout the country, to which elections were held Saturday. Earlier, the UPFA won 205 out of 234 Local Government bodies that polled in March this year. The polling on Saturday was for 65 local bodies that could not hold elections in March due to legal objections.
The massive win gave the UPFA 512 seats out of 875 in 65 Local Councils. The Illankai Thamil Arusu Katchchi got 183 seats while the UNP had to be content with just 137 seats.
With the end of the LG polls 2011, the ruling UPFA controls of 250 Local Government bodies in the country out of 335 that polled.
In the overall count, the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kadchi (ITAK) has come second winning 18 local bodies while Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) to secured two.
The United National Party (UNP) and Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) failed to secure a single LG body.
Officials of the Elections Department said that Saturday’s voting was peaceful except for a few minor incidents. Voting commenced at 7.00 am to elect 875 candidates for 65 local government authorities that include one Municipal Council, nine Urban Councils and 55 Pradeshiya Sabhas.
According to the officials the overall voter turnout was between 50 to 60 percent.
A special security arrangement was in place in and around the polling stations and the Security Forces jointly with the police launched a mobile service covering all areas where the elections were held.
