‘Abimansala’, a fully fledged wellness resort to provide lifetime care for disabled
war heroes was declared open by President Mahinda Rajapaksa in Anuradhapura
yesterday (July 26).
Equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, the resort provides all inclusive care for 52
totally dependent disabled soldiers who contributed to saving the motherland from
the menace of LTTE terrorism, sacrificing their limbs, eyes, flesh and blood.
Principally sponsored by the ‘Brave Hearts’ project of the Seva Vanitha Army
Branch, the wellness resort has been constructed on a 5.5-acre location closer to
Nuwarawewa, at a cost of Rs.219.6 million. The construction work that was within
the purview of the Sri Lanka Army Engineering Regiment was completed within a
year.
While the President extended support to obtain the land for the construction, this
venture has been financially supported by various organizations and individuals.
Subsequent to the opening ceremony, the President registered the first disabled
war hero to be admitted to the resort.
Afterwards, he visited all sections of the resort, and spoke with all the disabled war
heroes housed there.
The 157 staff of the resort includes doctors and specialists in various fields. The
facility provides specialized post injury care that is essential for the survival of the
disabled soldiers.
The wellness resort features an administrative centre, visitor centre with
accommodation, and separate accommodation for bed-ridden soldiers with severe
injuries. It also has two bedroom villas, counselling rooms, a laboratory, and
facilities for Ayurvedic treatment. The recreational centre of the facility includes
a library, a theatre, a spa, a religious centre, a music room and facilities for
entertainment.
‘Abimansala’ marks the inauguration of a nationwide programme to provide
comprehensive lifetime care for totally disabled soldiers. Similar facilities will
established in other provinces too, the Army says.
Yesterday’s event was attended by Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, Army
Commander Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya, Military Commanders, Secretary
to the President Lalith Weeratunga, North Central Province Chief Minister Berty
Premalal Dissanayake, Government Ministers, family members of the war heroes
members of the Army Seva Vanitha Unit.
