Fish canning factory in Galle soon

The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources will sign an agreement with a New
Zealand Company, Spirit Wind to set up a canned fish manufacturing plant in Galle.

The New Zealand Company will invest Rs.5 billion for the Galle factory.

The factory to be set up in Galle early next month is expected to produce initially
25,000 cans of fish per day, which will be increased to 70,000 cans per day in the
second stage of the project.

This is one of the two factories expected to be set up in Sri Lanka. According to the
Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Rajiha Senaratne these factories will save
a massive foreign expenditure that flows out of the country for canned fish and also
will be able to provide a high quality product while providing employment for the
local youth.

The factories are to be set up as public-private partnerships.
