Iran assures continued support

 

The Iranian government has assured continued support to Sri Lanka for its economic development.

The visiting Deputy Foreign Minister of Iran Syed Amir Mansour Borghei, has given this assurance when he called on Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne yesterday evening.

On a request from President Mahinda Rajapaksa Iran has granted assistance to build a housing project at a cost of US$ 1.5 million (Rs. 170 million) Kaththandi area in Batticaloa of the Eastern Province.

The housing project consists of 70 houses, a mosque, a playground for children, and a health center, the government said. The he 70 houses will be distributed to 50 Muslim and 20 Tamil families affected by the 2004 Tsunami.

The Iranian Minister, who is on an official visit in the country, will officially handover the housing scheme to the Sri Lankan government today (30).

The Iranian Minister also met Ministers Basil Rajapaksa and Prof. G.L. Peiris yesterday.
