The newly elected mayors and chairmen of local government bodies took oaths this morning.
Accordingly, 92 elected mayors, deputy mayors, chairmen and deputy chairmen of the UPFA took oaths before President Mahinda Rajapaksa at Temple Trees.
The UPFA won 45 out of the 65 local government bodies at election held on July 23.
Speaking at the occasion President Mahinda Rajapaksa said the latest election victory is another testimony of the peoples' faith upon the government and it is the utmost responsibility of the local government bodies to preserve it. President called upon the newly elected to be an active partner in the current massive development project undertaken by the government. General Secretary of UPFA Minister Susil Premajayantha said the appointments have been made to the top positions according to the number of preferential votes obtained by the elected officials. Elections for 234 of the 335 local authorities was held on March 17 this year. Of the remaining bodies, 65 local government bodies had polls on July 23.
