UK ready to offer support for C'wealth games

The UK might be able to offer some of its expertise to Sri Lanka, if it wins the bid for the 2018 Commonwealth Games, said the British High Commissioner, John Rankin celebrating the “One Year To Go” milestone with its own sporting event on Saturday (30).

27 July marked “one year to go” before the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games.

"The Olympics is a fabulous sporting event – people from across the world will be gripped by the excitement of seeing the world’s leading sportspeople compete in the greatest show on earth," he said.

Sporting events of this nature are not just about entertainment.

London 2012 will have a profound and lasting economic impact on the UK. The Olympic Games has created tens of thousands of jobs; is expected to bring a £2 billion (Rs 360 billion) increase in tourism revenues; and will support continued UK economic growth, the High Commissioner added.
