Further humanitarian assistance from Japan |

The Government of Japan has decided to extend a financial contribution of
100 million Japanese Yen (approximately 1.26 million US dollars) for
humanitarian assistance to internally displaced persons (IDPs) and IDP returnees in
Sri Lanka, the Embassy of Japan says.
This grant will be provided through the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). It will be utilized for various activities targeting the welfare of the IDPs.
Japan’s overall assistance to the Northern Province has covered a wide range of development-oriented areas while continuously addressing humanitarian needs.
The ongoing projects in the Northern Province funded by Japan include the improvement of the central functions of Jaffna Teaching Hospital, the construction of Vavuniya-Kilinochchi Transmission Line, demining assistance, development Planning in Jaffna and Mannar districts and livelihood assistance.
Japan hopes that these initiatives will benefit the people in the Northern Province and surrounding areas, and help them reconstruct their livelihoods.
The Embassy of Japan will continue its proactive support for the recovery in the
North and East and development of Sri Lanka in cooperation with the Government of Sri Lanka and the international community and NGOs.
