The Government has granted approval to establish 83 micro-hydro power plants and it will supply another 200mws to the National Grid next year.
“At present there is a demand for 2000mws and it will increase to 5000mws in 2020. We hope to provide 1000mws out of this by renewable energy such as water, wind, solar power and bio-mass”, the Minister of Power and Energy, Patali Champika Ranawaka said.
Currently wind power is producing 30mws and it is to be increased to 200mws in 2020, he added. Micro hydro power plants are supplying 170mws and it will increase to 500mws and the ministry had taken measures to produce 300mws from solar power and bio-mass, he said.
According to the minister, fossil fuels will be extinct by 2050 and building fuel power plants will also stop in the year 2030. As a result of this, introducing and promoting renewable energies will become more important, the minister further said.
