No need to extend Emergency Regulations – President

There was no longer a need to extend emergency regulations in the country, President Mahinda Rajapaksa told Parliament a short while ago.

The Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe speaking in parliament welcomed President Rajapaksa’s proposal to lift emergency regulations, as it would be a good start to lay the foundation for stronger democracy in Sri Lanka.

The Emergency Regulations are at present in force till August 30, 2011. They have to be reviewed by Parliament every month.
