SLFP celebrates Diamond anniversary today

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), the main constituent of Sri Lanka's ruling United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) will celebrate its Diamond Jubilee anniversary today, September 02.

The main anniversary ceremony will be held at Temple Trees under the chairmanship of party leader President Mahinda Rajapaksa this evening.

An Anniversary Week has been declared from August 30 till next Monday (September 05).

Religious observances, seminars and workshops on the party's future and present vision and programmes including the launch of development projects will be held during the week.

Membership promotion programmes as well as to evaluate the services of senior members and activists of the party will also be conducted.

Several development programmes will also be declared open during the week.

SLFP was founded by the 4th Prime Minister of Sri Lanka late S.W.R.D Bandaranaike with former member of the State Council and later Parliamentarian D. A. Rajapaksa and H. Sri Nissanka in 1951 and, since then, it has been one of the two largest parties in the Sri Lankan political arena.

The SLFP played a pivotal role in lifting the sagging morale of Security Forces to fight the separatists and strengthen the territorial integrity and independence of the country. The SLFP was founded by former Prime Minister SWRD Bandaranaike.
The Sri Lanka Freedom party has produced two executive Presidents.
