According to the sources at the Vavuniya Agriculture Department office, an additional 500 hectares of land that had been cleared of landmines have been used for the cultivation of paddy and other crops by farmers in the North this year.
After the end of the conflict, around 12000 hectares of land have been reportedly used for cultivation in Vavuniya, Mannar, Mullaitivu, Kilinochchi and Jaffna. An additional extent of 478 hectares has now been allocated for cultivation in de-mined areas.
The Government will provide farmers with necessary facilities.
In the mean time, measures are underway to release land which was once used as high security zones (HSZ) to its owners, Minister of Irrigation and Water Resource Management and Leader of the House Nimal Siripala de Silva told Parliament yesterday (Sep 6).
Responding to Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe, the Minister said that only 3.5-4% of the land was being used as high security zones (HSZ) contrary to the claim by the Opposition Leader who said that there was an extent of 25-30% of land used as HSZ.
Minister Silva also said that the situation of law and order in Jaffna was certainly at a satisfactory level.
