‘English as a Life Skill’ takes wings

 

A two-day workshop on spoken and listening skills in English at school level commenced at the Mihilaka Medura at BMICH today (September 12) with the participation of more than 400 attendees including English teachers, professional, and university lecturers representing the North and East and other parts of the country.

Organized by the Presidential Task Force for English and IT, and the Ministry of Education, this is yet another step of the ‘English as a Life Skill’ Programme initiated under the directions of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Explaining the objectives of the workshop, Secretary to the Ministry of Higher Education H.M. Gunasekara said that it is the Ministry’s responsibility to make Sri Lanka a knowledge hub, and in so doing, the English language needs to be spread.

Expressing his views, Presidential Consultant Sunimal Fernando appreciated the President’s commitment to make English a language of the common people.

The workshop will be held until tomorrow. An MoU will be signed between India and Sri Lanka to further the objectives of this venture.

The opening ceremony was attended by Convener of the Presidential Task Force for English and IT and Presidential Consultant Sunimal Fernando, Commissioner General of Examinations Anura Edirisinghe, Director General of National Institute of Education Prof. Aberatha Banda and Acting Vice-Chancellor of the English Language University in Hyderabad Prof. A.
