Colombo is a beautiful city today. However, making the city beautiful externally is not adequate. Simultaneous action needs to taken to beautify hearts as well as the pulse of the people living in Colombo, said President Mahinda Rajapaksa, addressing a gathering of Muslims who met with him at Temple Trees with UPFA candidate for Colombo Municipal Council Azath Sally on September 17.
He stressed that the Government has no plans to evict slum-dwellers from the city. The Government intends to uplift their living conditions by providing them with better housing facilities on the same locations they live currently. People should not be misled by misinformation campaigns, he added.
When the LTTE forced mass evictions of Muslims from their native villages in the North and East in the recent past, the so-called heroes who claim to represent the Muslim community now, were silent, he said. At present, all those evicted Muslims have been resettled in their native places, and provided with necessary facilities. Therefore, people need to trust the Government endeavours, the President noted.
He also emphasized that the country should be built for today’s children as well as the future generation.
With the President’s intervention, a land worth Rs. 32 million was donated to the Khairiya Muslim Girls College, Borella to expand their school facilities.
UPFA candidate Azath Sally and Ministers Rajitha Senaratne, Johnston Fernando and Faizer Mustapha also addressed the gathering.
