President Mahinda Rajapaksa during his tour to New York to attend the 66th session of the United Nations General Assembly held discussions with the state leaders of Slovenia, Kirgizstan and Nigeria yesterday (Sep 20). These discussions focused attention on the progress of resettlement of IDPs and de-mining activities in the North and East after defeating terrorism, post-conflict management and the success of the recent Local Authority Elections held in those areas. The President elaborated on the development thrust targeting speedy economic development in the country. Slovenian President Dr. Danilo Türk noted that the reconciliation process in Sri Lanka is a good example to the whole world. He commended the speedy economic growth and development achieved by Sri Lanka within a short period of time after the end of the conflict.
Discussions with Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan were focused on many areas including economy and trade that are important to both countries. The need for further increasing bilateral relations between the two countries was highlighted.
Kirgizstani President Roza Otunbayeva appreciated Sri Lankan Tea. President Rajapaksa requested his Kirgizstani counterpart to send a delegation to Sri Lanka to undertake research work on Sri Lankan Tea.
In the meantime, Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Robert O. Blake also met with President Rajapaksa.
