Lanka’s boat exports on the increase

Continuing its growth momentum since 2008, the boat building industry of Sri Lanka has recorded US$ 48 million worth exports in the first half of this year.

The industry is confident of surpassing the US$100 mark by the end of next year as export orders from India and the Gulf Region are on the increase, said Managing Director of the Boat Building Technology Improvement Institute Gamini B. Herath.

He said that the exports grew steadily from 2008 recording an increase from US$ 20 million to US$ 54 million in 2009.

Sri Lanka exports leisure boats, speed boats, fishing boats and other vessels to Seychelles, Mauritius, Somalia, Djibouti, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and the Maldives. The country focuses on expanding the existing markets in these countries.
