Knowledge from reading, basis of a country’s development
- Secretary to President

Creating a worthy population by inculcating the habit of reading in school children is a challenge we have faced today, said Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga at the opening ceremony of the ‘Nena Guna Piyasa’: a project to set up libraries in schools lacking in resources in the Monaragala district on September 30.

The first phase of this programme was initiated at Thambana Primary School in the Bilila education division, with the participation of Chief Minister of the Uwa Province Shashindra Rajapaksa.

Secretary Weeratunga noted that schools with meager resources are given libraries under a concept of President Mahinda Rajapaksa. The best investment of today on behalf of the future generation is creating responsible people via education, he stressed.

Even though outcomes of physical development of a country are visible within a short period of time, results of education cannot be realized very quickly. The development of every aspect of a country rests on the development of its education, he said.

The porgrammes like this can be successfully initiated due to the affection extended by the present leadership towards the country’s children, he added. This project will cover 27 schools in the Monaragala district and 1500 schools across the country.
