New domestic airport in Kandy

Making Kandy a real ‘Maha-Nuwara’

Measures have been taken to make Kandy a real ‘Maha-Nuwara’: a magnificent city. A domestic airport will be constructed in Kandy for the city to achieve the maximum benefits of the country’s booming tourism industry, stated President Mahinda Rajapaksa, addressing a gathering of businessmen, professionals and scholars at Janadhipathi Mandiraya in Kandy on October 2.

He said that he instructed the Chief Minister of the Central Province to allocate a conducive location for the proposed airport.

Despite the fact that the Kandy Municipal Council was under the UNP for 58 years, the city still has the unresolved problems of garbage and traffic congestion. He stressed that it is high time to bring about a remarkable change against this backdrop.

He said he loves Kandy because it is the central city of Buddhists. The Government has allocated a sum of Rs. 3 billion on developing the city. He questioned as to when the city would be developed, and noted that the lethargy of the Municipal Council poses a challenge to the Government. For an effective development of the city, the Municipal Council needs to represent the Government, he reiterated.

Elaborating on the speedy economic growth achieved by the Government within just two years, the President said that the decision of Kandy’s development rests with its people.
