Election campaigning ended

 

All election related campaign activities for the third tier of local government elections were ended by midnight Wednesday.

According to elections laws, all election propaganda should end 48 hours prior to the elections. The elections for the remaining 23 local government bodies will be held on Saturday, October 08.

All election propaganda materials including posters, cutouts and banners will not be allowed to display after the deadline, Additional Elections Commissioner W. P. Sumanasiri said.

Meanwhile, all major political parties held their final election rallies yesterday.

The last rally of the ruling party UPFA will be held yesterday at the Kosgashandiya area while the major opposition UNP held its rally Hulftsdorf. The main faction of JVP will held the last rally at Maligawatta.

A total of 6,488 candidates contest for the 420 positions in the 23 local bodies that include 17 municipal councils and 5 Pradeshiya Sabhas.

Over 1.58 million voters are qualified to vote in the Colombo municipality and 1,121 candidates from 8 political parties and 10 independent groups are contesting for a seat in the CMC.

Meanwhile the Senior DIG for elections Gamini Navaratna has said that extra security has been provided for the locales holding the elections.
