President Mahinda Rajapaksa instructed authorities to expedite three development projects in the booming tourism sector, in a discussion in Temple Trees on October 21. The discussion focused attention on renovations to the Grand Oriental Hotel, Colombo, construction of the Celestial Hotel, Colombo, and also the proposed construction of a hotel complex in Hambantota. President’s Chief of Staff Gamini Senarath apprised President of the current status of these projects.
Decisions were made to resume the construction of the Celestial Hotel, which is at a standstill now. It was decided that the construction should comprise of 360 rooms featuring all required facilities.
The discussion also focused attention at length on the present condition of the Grand Oriental Hotel, and the changes necessary for its improvement.
Having observed the plan of the proposed hotel complex in Hambantota, the President instructed to retain the Sri Lankan identity in the construction.
