Kandy airport construction begins next month

 

Preliminary construction work of the domestic airport in Kandy which is to be handled by the Sri Lanka Air Force will commence next month.

The Government has identified over 300 acres of land in the Karandagolla area in Kandy District to construct this domestic airport, proposed by President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

According to the Minister of Mass Media and Information Keheliya Rambukwella, discussions are also underway to acquire some of the land belonging to the Peradeniya University for the airport project.

The proposed airport is expected to help boost the tourism industry in the country. Kandy, the cultural capital of Sri Lanka with the world-famous Temple of Tooth Relic is a major tourist destination next to the Sri Lanka’s capital Colombo.

Construction of this airport is a part of the project envisaged by the Government under the personal direction of President Mahinda Rajapaksa to revive the glory and grandeur of the yore to Kandy.
