Cigarette production declines by 20%

The cigarette production in Sri Lanka has declined by 20% between the years 2005 and 2010 according to the Excise Department figures, says Sri Lanka Medical Association committee member Dr. Sajeewa Ranaweera.

With the implementation of the Tobacco and Alcohol Act by the Government, the cigarette consumption also has decreased. The Government must be praised for that, he further says.

As figures stand, the annual cigarette production that stood at 4,900m has decreased to 4,200m during the last five years. Sri Lanka records the lowest rate of daily smokers, which is 18.6%, among 140 countries. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) research findings, the cigarette consumption in Sri Lanka has come down in a significant manner.
