More use of English and IT by rural children reflects the results of President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s endeavours to take English and IT to the rural sector, said Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga. He made these observations while attending the ceremony to give certificates to those who successfully completed the 100-hour spoken English programme organized by the Presidential Special Task Force for English and IT, held yesterday (Nov 23) at the Bandaranaike International Education Centre. 135 successful students in the adult category received certificates.
IT literacy in Sri Lanka was at a low level several years ago. However, the recent figures show that the rate has increased to 38%, he said. Special focus will be given to districts with lower literacy rates, he added.
Expressing his views, Convener of the Presidential Special Task Force for English and IT Sunimal Fernando said that the 100-hour spoken English programme will cover all principals and vice-principals across the country, and will conclude in 2012.
