Sri Lanka would be a unique example to the whole world as it constructed a peaceful environment within a short period of time after the end of 30 years internal conflict, Former Vice-President, International Court of Justice, Judge C. G. Weeramantry said yesterday.
Addressing the mine action awareness programme at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute, Justice Weeramantry pointed out that now Sri Lanka was making progress towards banning landmines in the country through its commitment to acceding to the Mine Ban Treaty. It would guarantee that landmines would not be possessed by or used by Sri Lanka in future.
The eminent jurist said that ‘The Ottawa Treaty’ or ‘Mine Ban Treaty’, formally the Convention on the Prohibition of the use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on their Destruction, completely banned all anti-personnel landmines.
The disabled people needed to live as equals as other citizen in the country. It was very important to rehabilitate and reintegrate the people with disabilities. Public awareness should be raised to the cause, he said.
