LG authorities to be empowered to oversee implementation |

Steps would be taken to empower all local government authorities to oversee the proper implementation of the national language policy within their districts, Minister of National Languages and Social Integration Vasudeva Nanayakkara said.
Participating in a workshop at Ratnapura on language usage and the execution of a national language policy in the local government administration, the minister explained that Sri Lankans had to suffer immensely because their lack of respect and recognition for each other’s language, religion or race in comparison to other developing countries. He noted the huge economical fallout due to that. He said the president had put an end to the war and it was the collective responsibility and duty of all to ensure that such a situation would not recur hereafter.
The minister made it clear that it was necessary to properly execute the language usage and national languages policy to ensure that all races receive equal respect and equal opportunity to work as a Sri Lankan within a unified country.
The minister said that any Sri Lankan should have the right to have all his services carried out in one’s respective mother tongue at any government office. He explained that it was their responsibility, as representatives of the general public to create a positive environment wherever there is a lack of necessary facilities and a suitable environment.
