Four more fisheries harbours

Plans are afoot to construct four fisheries harbours in Gandara, Gurunagar, Silawaturai and Kalametiya and to improve the seven fisheries harbours at Kudawella, Puranawella, Mirissa, Hikkaduwa, Beruwala and Dikkowita, according to an answer tabled by Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Minister Rajitha Senaratne in Parliament recently.

These proposals are awaiting the approval of the National Planning Department to proceed, the tabled answer said.

Creating new employment opportunities, boosting fish production, increasing number of fishing vessels and providing anchoring facilities for larger vessels are the major objectives of these development projects.

Meanwhile, steps have been taken to improve Artisanal Fishery Port at Point Pedro in the Jaffna district under JICA Grant Aid.
