Sri Lanka will mark the National Safety Day today to commemorate the lives lost due to the devastating Indian Ocean tsunami on the Boxing day of 2004. The main event of this year's commemoration will be held at the Kattankudi Cultural Center in Batticaloa from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon with the participation of Prime Minister D M Jayaratne as the Chief Guest on the invitation of Minister of Disaster Management Mahinda Amaraweera.
The thousands of people who lost their lives to the tsunami will be remembered with a nation-wide two minute silence from 9:25 a.m. to 9:27 a.m. on Monday.
The vehicle drivers are also requested to halt their vehicles and observe the two-minute silence.
