Elections to the two local government bodies have been postponed till March 10, 2012.

Nominations for Elections Department officials have said elections for Puthukudiyiruppu Pradeshiya Sabha and Maritime Pattu Pradeshiya Sabha were handed in on January 6 this year.

However, elections had to be postponed till December 31, 2011 by the Elections Commissioner since the area under the two local government bodies were being de-mined and displaced people were still being re-settled.

According to the Elections Commissioner's Department, the district is currently affected by the monsoon rains.

The decision to postpone the elections once again was made after discussing with the Mullativu District elections office.
