The Government has taken action to develop 1,000 National Schools and 5000 primary schools this year.
Under this programme, three National schools will be established in each Divisional Secretariat Division.
According to the Minister of Education Bandula Gunewardene, the National Schools will have classes from grades 6-13 and will be mixed. Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim students will be studying in the same school as in the past.
All modern facilities that are found in city schools, such as, computer, language and science labs and sports facilities will be provided to these schools, the Minister said. Students can enter the schools by excelling at the Grade 5 scholarship examinations and by performing well at the relevant entrance examinations, he added.
5000 primary schools will also be established island wide parallel to the 1,000 National Schools programme. This programme will solve many of the problems currently faced in the education system, including the competition to enter grade one as well as the bribery and corruption that goes along with it, the Minister said.
