Arrangements have been made to increase the passenger handling capacity in airports to 12 Million by 2015 from the current capacity of 6 million.
According to the Chairman of the Airport and Aviation Sri Lanka Limited Prasanna Wickramasooriya, air cargo handling services will also be increased in parallel to the increase of the passenger handling capacity.
He said that the second international airport will be opened in Mattala at the end of this year, and the Mattala airport will handle 60 percent of air cargo services and 40 percent of passenger services.
Mr. Wickramasooriya said that Mattala will be the eco-friendly airport in the world. Internal air terminal will set up in Katunayake airport in par with internal aviation service development.
He said that tenders will be called in April for the development of the second phase of Katunayake International Airport. Rs.350 million will be spent on this project.
