Northern hospitals to be developed

The Ministry of Health has taken action to further develop the health facilities in the hospitals in the Northern Province, utilizing Rs. two billion received from the Global Fund as a response to a request made by the Ministry.

Accordingly, a massive development drive is to be implemented under a five year plan (2011 - 2016) to upgrade health facilities in the Northern Province, a Health Ministry spokesman said.

Around 40 new medical laboratories and two regional training centres will be built in the Northern Province under the same development plan. Vehicles will also be provided for the laboratories and regional training centres utilizing the same funds. Malaria and TB control units will also be set up in the province, he said.

A special discussion was held at the Medical Research Institute (MRI), Colombo on Jan. 30 in connection with the implementation of the five year development plan, the spokesman further stated.
