Japanese youth ship to Colombo today


A Japanese cruise ship Fuji Maru, carrying a contingent of over 270 youth of various nationalities, as part of the ‘Ship for World Youth’ (SWY) programme, being run by the Cabinet Office, Government of Japan, is due to arrive in Sri Lanka today (Feb. 16) after a lapse of 17 years.

The 24th edition of the programme, which involves youth of Japan and other nationalities, has been aimed at providing an on-board living experience that could make a world of difference for the youngsters.

On January 31, the ship left Yokahama Port carrying 140 youths from Japan and another 132 from 12 other countries India, Bahrain, Brazil, Canada, Egypt, New Zealand, Peru, Russia, Spain, Sri Lanka, Turkey and Venezuela. It docked in the Chennai Port on Sunday.

The ship will arrive in Colombo today on a four-day visit and eventually complete the 35-day programme back in Tokyo on March 5.
