Enumeration of homeless people began yesterday. The Census and Statistics Department has given a special training for the officials deployed in this regard.
Counting of the people in households was finished by yesterday and the officials are to visit households today to verify if the persons registered for the census under the particular household stayed in the house last night.
The two days of March 20th and 21st have been set aside to make corrections related to deaths and births.
The Department commenced the final stage of the census on February 27.
The census will be conducted under the supervision of the District Secretaries and the Divisional Secretaries. Nearly 100,000 supervisors and 80,000 enumerators will take part in the census.
The Department said that all citizens are legally bound to provide accurate information and allow access to their homes for the enumerators.
This is the first population and housing census carried out throughout the entire island following the end of the three-decade long conflict. The last nationwide census in Sri Lanka was conducted in 1981.
