The government is currently monitoring whether sufficient stocks of essential items are in the market during this festive season.
The Cooperatives and Internal Trade Ministry together with the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has launched a monitoring mechanism to assure smooth supply of essential items to the consumers.
Apart from monitoring the inflow of essential commodities to the market, the CAA is also monitoring the prices of goods in order to prevent any undue price increases.
Meanwhile, the Ministry has assured consumers that prices of commodities would not be increased during the festive season.
The Trade Minister has also instructed the CAA to inspect all warehouses within the main towns to assure the quality of the food items.
The CAA has also raided a warehouse in Colombo and seized a large quantity of food items that are outdated or spoiled.
The Authority has been directed by the Ministry to take stern action legal against errant traders.
