Govt establishes mechanism to release information on detainees


The government has established a mechanism to provide details of the current and past detainees taken into custody by the Terrorist Investigation Division (TID).

The programme providing information relating to detainees currently under the custody of TID and those who have been already released is now in operation.

"A round-the-clock mechanism has been established to provide of the details of the detainees and those who are already released by the Terrorist Investigation Division," an official statement released by the TID said.

The Ministry of Defence on Sunday said the information will be provided only to the close relatives such as the spouse, children, parents and siblings.

The relatives are required to establish their identity through a certified letter from the Officer-In-Charge (OIC) of the relevant police station or the Grama Niladhari (Village Officer) of the area of residence.
